Essential Tips for K-12 Mainstream Teachers Working with English Language LearnersWhen working with ELL's, it is important to remember that they are constantly doing two tasks at once: learning the content and learning the language. It is the ESL teacher's job to teach students the language of the content areas, but it is the mainstream teacher's job to make the content accessible to ELL's. Click on the document below for more information.
A Few Myths about ELL StudentsThink you know your ELL students? You might be surprised. Click on the document below to learn facts from language research regarding ELL's.
Assigning GradesWhen giving grades to ELLs, keep the following in mind:
Grades represent what the student understands about the subject matter after appropriate modifications and interventions have been documented. Grades should not represent the student's level of English proficiency, i.e. schools should not penalize students at lower levels of English proficiency. Assigning a lower grade to an ELL student because of language is unacceptable. ELLs should be graded on their progress towards the grade level standard based on their proficiency level. Hiring an InterpreterIf you need a translator/interpreter (for meetings, notes sent home, phone calls, documents, etc.), contact your building's ESL teacher:
